Face the change - Enfrenta el cambio

Hace más que un año que publiqué una entrada por aquí. Estaba muy ocupada con projetos al trabajo y para la primera mitad de 2020 con la educación en la casa de mis tres niños. No obstante seguí con mi aprendizaje de idiomas y publiqué entradas en mi perfiles de redes sociales, por ejemplo en Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/miriams_lingotopia/). Durante el semestre de invierno 19/20, participé a un curso de turco en mi universidad. Por desgracia, debido a los horarios del semestre de verano, no pude continuar con el curso de turco, sino que sólo hice algo de turco.  En marzo participé al Langjam otra vez y aprendí ucranio que me gustó muchísimo. Ahora indecisa entre ucranio y ruso y los practico alternativamente. El idioma en lo que me estoy focalizando recientemente es el francés. Estaba publicando varios entradas en francés en mis perfiles en los redes sociales. Empezé a escribir un blog en francés también: https://francaispasapas.blogspot.com/. Lo he abandonado después de tres entradas, pero espero que voy a continuar con el.

It's over a year ago, that I wrote my last blog post here. I've been very busy with projects at work and in the first half of 2020 with homeschooling my three kids as well. But it doesn't mean that I didn't do any language learning or wasn't active in social media. I still posted on my Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/miriams_lingotopia/). During the winter semester 19/20 I took a Turkish language course at my university. Unfortunately due to conflicting time schedules in the summer semester I couldn't continue with the Turkish course but only did some Turkish on the side. In March I took part in the Langjam again and this time I got Ukrainian and enjoyed it a lot. Now I'm a bit indecisive between Ukrainian and Russian, and study them alternately. But not very seriously. The language I'm mainly focusing recently on is French and I've been posting quite a couple of French texts in my social media profiles and also starting a French blog, which I stopped after just three posts again but I hope to take it up again: https://francaispasapas.blogspot.com/. 

Este año he entendido que debo seguir mi propio ritmo. No debería dejarme estresar por las expectativas o metas de otras personas. Mi último post de septiembre de 2019 fue sobre los desafíos del lenguaje. Me gustó mucho participar en los desafíos lingüísticos y probablemente lo haré de nuevo en el futuro. Pero tener que publicar algo todos los días, me estresa totalmente. Por ejemplo, me encanta escribir textos en mis idiomas de destino. Pero necesito algo de inspiración. Algunos días puedo escribir mucho y otros días (o incluso semanas) sólo necesito un descanso. En julio participé en un desafío de escritura en italki. Al final del mes sólo he escrito 12 de 30 textos en francés. Así que el 31 de julio escribí 7 textos seguidos para ponerme al día. Mis dos temas favoritos fueron el amor parásito entre los pescadores (https://www.italki.com/notebook/2918439/entry/1090050) y el creado accidentalmente Sturddlefish (https://www.italki.com/notebook/2918439/entry/1090063). Este diciembre participé en el Lingua Franca Challenge y aprendí irlandés durante un mes. Lo que me gusta de los desafíos de idiomas es la comunidad de apoyo y no la competencia y me di cuenta de que no importa si practico todos los días o no, siempre y cuando me sienta feliz y cómoda con mi viaje de aprendizaje de idiomas. No tengo prisa.

What I also learnt during this last year: I need to follow my own rhythm. Should not let myself get stressed out over other people's expectations or goals. My last post from September 2019 was about language challenges. I really enjoyed taking part in language challenges and will probably do so again in the future. But having to post something every day, totally stressed me out. For instance, I love writing texts in my target languages. But I need some inspiration. On some days I can write a lot and on some days (or even weeks) I just need a break. In July I took part in a writing challenge on italki. At the end of the month I had only 12 of 30 French texts written. So, on July 31rd I wrote 7 texts in a row to catch up. My two favourite topics were parasitic love between anglerfishes https://www.italki.com/notebook/2918439/entry/1090050) and the accidentally created Sturddlefish (https://www.italki.com/notebook/2918439/entry/1090063). This December I took part in the Lingua Franca Challenge and learnt Irish for a month. I posted on Instagram and Facebook about this, but those who don’t follow me on social media can find my posts here: http://lingotopia.blogspot.com/p/irish-lingua-franca-challenge.html. What I like about language challenges is the supportive community and not the competition and I realised that it doesn't matter if I practice every day or not, as long as I feel happy and comfortable with my language learning journey. I'm in no rush.

Italki ha sido mi sitio web para corregir mis mensajes y participar con otros estudiantes de idiomas en discusiones culturales y lingüísticas durante los últimos cinco años. Hasta cierto punto fue contraproducente para mi aprendizaje del idioma porque no mucha gente participaba en discusiones no inglesas (ni siquiera en francés, español o alemán que son bastante populares en italki). Pero al igual que con los desafíos lingüísticos, disfruté mucho de la comunidad e hice muchos amigos allí. Corregí más de 1000 entradas de cuadernos en alemán, publiqué 414 discusiones y 343 entradas de cuadernos. Considerando lo poco que publico en mi propio blog aquí, eso fue bastante productivo para mí. Estoy empezando a archivar algunas de mis publicaciones en italki. Puedes encontrar un par de posts sobre palabras y expresiones en inglés aquí: https://lingotopia.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_10.html. A principios de septiembre, italki cerró el foro de discusión y la sección de entradas de cuaderno sin previo aviso y lanzó una nueva aplicación con una comunidad "renovada". La única mejora que veo es la posibilidad de subir imágenes y archivos de audio. Aparte de eso parece una copia de Hellotalk y ha perdido su "sensación italki" única. Ya no hay búsqueda de compañeros de idioma, ya no hay foro de discusión. Ahora es una red de medios sociales donde la gente hace mensajes muy cortos que se pierden incluso más rápido que en el anterior foro de discusión, arrastrado por un torrente de solicitudes de socios de idiomas. Es imposible encontrar discusiones interesantes relacionadas con la cultura y el aprendizaje de idiomas. También es muy difícil encontrar mensajes en ciertos idiomas para corregirlos, así que he dejado de corregir los mensajes en alemán y he eliminado la aplicación. Después de cinco años aprendiendo idiomas en italki y discutiendo y debatiendo en su foro, es hora de buscar un nuevo "hogar". A decir verdad, no me gusta este cambio pero también es una oportunidad. Una oportunidad para repensar mis estrategias de aprendizaje de idiomas y también para encontrar otras prósperas comunidades de aprendizaje de idiomas. Veamos, dónde me llevará mi viaje desde aquí.

Italki has been my go to website for getting my posts corrected and engaging with other language learners in cultural and linguistic discussions for the last five years. To some degree it was counterproductive for my language learning because not many people would take part in non-English discussions (not even in French, Spanish or German which are fairly popular on italki). But as with the language challenges I really enjoyed the community and made many friends there. I corrected more than 1000 German notebook entries, posted 414 discussions and 343 notebook entries. Considering how rarely I post on my own blog here, that was quite productive for me. I'm starting to archive some of my italki posts now. You can find a couple of posts about English words and expressions here: https://lingotopia.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_10.html. At the beginning of September though, italki has shut down the discussion forum and the notebook entry section without prior warning and released a new app with a "revamped" community. The only improvement I see is the possibility to upload images and audio files. Apart from that it looks like a copy of Hellotalk and has lost its unique "italki feeling". There's no language partner search anymore, there's no discussion forum anymore. It's now a social media network where people make very short posts that get lost even quicker than in the previous discussion forum, swept away from a torrent of language partner requests. It's impossible to find interesting culture and language learning related discussions. It's also really hard to find posts in certain languages for correction, so I've given up on correcting German posts and deleted the app. After five years learning languages on italki and discussing and debating on its forum, it's time to look for a new "home". Honestly, I don't like this change but it's also a chance. A chance to re-think my language learning strategies and also find other thriving language learning communities. Let's see, where my journey will take me from here.
